In the aftermath of the Christchurch killings, Australians are slowly coming to grips with how race and ethnicity is discussed in this country. More than 75% of Australians identify with an ancestry other than Australian, making it a uniquely diverse country, yet certain quarters of our politics and media still engage in old fashioned race-baiting tactics. After finding out the killer was Australian, there is a need to ask whether our anti-discrimination laws can better shape the discourse surrounding race toward something more benevolent.

Simon Rice, who is a Professor of Law at the University of Sydney, was on The Daily to discuss discrimination and the law.
